When it comes to skincare, it seems logical that slathering your face in moisturizers and serums will lead to a glowy, blemish-free complexion. And while this is partly true (there are plenty of skincare products out there that works wonders!), the things we put in our body heavily impact on our outward appearance.

This includes our diets, and dietary supplements like vitamins. You may even have noticed that some of your go-to skincare products contain vitamins, in particular, vitamin C. That’s because vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that aids in your skin’s natural regeneration process, helping your body to repair damaged cells. This also makes it a powerful tool in combating hyperpigmentation, or dark spots. Let’s take a closer look at why exactly vitamin C is such a life-changing supplement!

Vitamin C

Whether in the form of sun spots or acne scars, it's likely that most people will experience hyperpigmentation in their life. The good news is there are steps you can take to change up your skin routine that will help even out skin tone and prevent more dark spots from appearing. One step in the right direction is taking a vitamin C supplement, which stimulates collagen production for healthy skin.

"Vitamin C is a key player in collagen synthesis, so taking a daily boost of vitamin C via your diet or via a high-quality supplement, like vitamin C, can help maintain your collagen production," Lauren Manaker, MS, RDN for Zhou Nutrition tells us.

OK, but why is collagen so important? Well, as a type of protein that plays a key role in building and supporting body tissues, collagen is “especially good for keeping your skin moisturized and elastic, ultimately preventing wrinkles and the appearance of aging,” explains registered dietician Trista Best.

And that's not all! Vitamin C also inhibits tyrosinase, which is needed for melanin production. Melanin is what causes discoloration like dark spots and hyperpigmentation-so in other words, continued vitamin C intake will help prevent dark spots from forming altogether. This brightening agent fades problem areas without altering normal skin color, giving you that all-over, fresh-faced glow you've been craving.

If you're looking to remove dark spots, you can opt to take vitamin C in supplement form or apply it topically. Overall, dermatologists seem to agree that the best vitamin C skincare products to apply are in serum form, as serum is more effective than creams or toners.

Vitamin C is even more effective when it's combined with other antioxidants (like vitamin E), giving you a one-two punch of protection against free radical damage.

A fantastic skincare choice is Skinceuticals' C E Ferulic, which-while expensive-is totally worth it. It combines vitamin C, vitamin E and ferulic acid to brighten skin and provide visible anti-aging benefits.

Go ahead and start making vitamin C a part of your daily routine (if you haven't already). Your skin will thank you!
