Target is facing backlash after a children’s Halloween costume went viral on social media, with customers accusing the design of resembling racist blackface and 19th-century minstrel imagery.

The costume was listed on Target’s website and app under the name “Kids’ Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume Bodysuit.” Priced at $25, the outfit featured a black-and-orange patterned costume, black gloves and shoes, along with a head covering resembling a mask and an exaggerated clown smile.

After images of the costume circulated online, customers quickly criticized the design, with some saying its appearance evoked imagery associated with blackface and historical minstrel shows.

Target Faces Backlash Over 'Offensive' Halloween Costume

Target has since removed the costume from its website and issued an apology.

“As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry,” Target said in a statement Monday. “The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment. It is no longer available for sale.”

The controversy comes amid broader criticism of Target’s approach to diversity and inclusion. The retailer discontinued several of its DEI initiatives following President Donald Trump’s January 2025 executive order targeting diversity programs.

Even after the costume was removed, however, social media users continued to criticize the retailer.

“They knew... they must have. I refuse to believe they didn't,” one person wrote. “It had to be signed off by numerous people too, so there is no excuse at all.”

“This is appalling. What’s more appalling are people in the comments not understanding ‘what the fuss is about,’” another commenter said.

“BOYCOTT!!! Some have been boycotting since they removed DEI,” another wrote. “They only care when it impacts their money. SHOP LOCAL!!!”

“This is so offensive! They got rid of DEI and clearly have lost their minds,” another person commented.

Target’s apology and removal of the costume appear to have ended its availability, but the incident has reignited debate online about how retailers review and approve products before putting them on sale.
