All About The Viral Ukrainian Manicure Trend People Are Asking For This Season

If your social media feeds are filled with impossibly clean cuticles, ultra-neat nail beds and polish that appears to sit almost seamlessly against the skin, there’s a good chance you’ve come across the viral Ukrainian manicure.

The technique has been gaining attention in salons and across social media for its precision-focused approach to nail prep. Unlike a traditional manicure, which may involve soaking the nails and pushing back the cuticles, the Ukrainian manicure is typically performed as a dry manicure, often using an electric file, or e-file, and specialized bits to carefully remove excess cuticle from around the nail plate.

The result is an exceptionally clean-looking nail bed that can make even a simple nude or sheer manicure appear polished and expensive.

What Is a Ukrainian Manicure?

A Ukrainian manicure is primarily about cuticle preparation and precision rather than a particular nail shape, color or design.

The nails are generally worked on while dry, with a nail technician carefully lifting and removing excess dead skin around the cuticle area. An e-file may be used to refine the cuticle and surrounding skin before the nail is shaped and the chosen polish or gel is applied.

One of the biggest reasons the technique has gone viral is the incredibly close-looking polish application. Because the nail plate is so thoroughly prepared, technicians can apply color very close to the cuticle line, creating the appearance of a seamless, ultra-clean finish.

It can be particularly striking with minimalist manicures, including sheer pinks, milky whites, nude shades and glossy neutrals.

Why Is It Called a Ukrainian Manicure?

The name refers to the technique's strong association with Ukrainian nail technicians and nail salons, particularly the highly detailed cuticle work for which the style has become known.

Ukrainian nail artists have helped popularize the meticulous technique internationally through social media, where close-up videos of the preparation process and incredibly precise finished manicures have attracted millions of views.

The name doesn't mean that the manicure originated from a single standardized method or that every Ukrainian nail technician uses the exact same technique. Rather, “Ukrainian manicure” has become a popular beauty-industry term for this particular style of dry, precision cuticle preparation.

Why Is Everyone Obsessed With It?

The appeal is simple: the manicure looks extremely clean. A carefully prepared cuticle area can make the nails appear longer and more defined, while polish applied close to the cuticle creates a seamless finish.

And because the focus is on clean nail preparation rather than elaborate nail art, the result can look sophisticated without being flashy. The technique also photographs particularly well, which has helped fuel its popularity on TikTok and Instagram.

Close-up videos showcasing the transformation from grown-out cuticles to an immaculate finished manicure make the process especially satisfying to watch.

How To Get a Ukrainian Manicure

If you want to try the trend, look for a nail technician who is specifically trained in dry manicures and e-file cuticle work rather than simply asking for a traditional manicure.

A typical appointment may involve:

1. Nail and cuticle assessment: Your technician will examine the nails and surrounding skin before beginning.

2. Dry cuticle preparation: Instead of soaking the hands, the technician carefully pushes back and lifts the cuticle area.

3. Precision e-file work: Specialized bits may be used to remove dead skin and refine the cuticle area. This is the step that requires the most skill and training.

4. Nail shaping: The nails are filed into your preferred shape, whether that’s almond, square, oval or another style.

5. Polish or gel application: Color is applied very close to the cuticle line to create the signature clean finish.

6. Finishing touches: Cuticle oil and hand care are added to leave the skin looking smooth and hydrated.

One Important Safety Note

The technique may look simple in viral videos, but e-file cuticle work requires training and precision. Cutting or filing living tissue too aggressively can cause irritation, bleeding or increase the risk of infection. For that reason, this is one trend that's better left to a trained professional rather than attempted at home with an e-file. Your technician should also use properly sanitized or single-use tools and avoid cutting healthy living skin.

Ultimately, you don't need elaborate nail art to make a manicure stand out. The Ukrainian manicure trend is proof that sometimes the most striking beauty look is simply perfectly prepped, ultra-clean and glossy nails.
