2 Eye Makeup Mistakes To Avoid At All Costs After 50 Because They Can Make You Look Way Older

There are no hard-and-fast makeup rules at any age, and turning 50 certainly doesn’t mean giving up the colors, products, or techniques you love. But as skin naturally changes over time, the eye makeup that worked beautifully years ago may not create the same effect you’re looking for today. Fine lines, changes in texture, and shifts in the shape of the eye area can all influence how liner, shadow, and other products sit on the skin—and a few simple technique changes can make a surprisingly big difference.

The goal isn’t to hide your age or make mature skin look like younger skin. Instead, great makeup can enhance your features, brighten and define your eyes, and help you feel like the best version of yourself. If you’re finding that your usual eye makeup suddenly looks heavier or harsher than you’d like, these two common mistakes could be the reason. Avoiding them can help create a softer, fresher look while still leaving plenty of room to have fun with your makeup.

1. Applying Harsh Black Eyeliner

Black eyeliner can be beautifully dramatic, but a thick, harsh line—especially when applied around the entire eye—can sometimes make mature eyes appear smaller or more closed off. Very dark, precise liner can also create a stronger contrast against the skin, which may draw attention to changes in texture around the eyes. Instead of giving up eyeliner altogether, you can soften the effect. Choose a deep brown, charcoal, bronze, or plum pencil and apply it close to the upper lash line, then gently smudge the edges with a small brush. You’ll still get plenty of definition, but the softer finish can make the eyes appear more open and lifted.

2. Applying Too Much Glitter Eyeshadow

A little sparkle can look gorgeous at any age, so there’s no reason to banish shimmer from your makeup bag after 50. The issue is usually chunky glitter or highly metallic shadow applied heavily across the lids, which can catch the light on fine lines and textured areas and make them more noticeable. For a more flattering approach, swap chunky glitter for a slight shimmer, satin, or softly luminous shadow. Keep most of the lid relatively smooth and add a touch of sheen to the center of the lid or inner corners. You’ll get that pretty, light-catching effect without allowing the glitter to overwhelm your eyes.
