Much like your skin and nails, your hair is a window into your health. When something is wrong on the inside, it could reflect in the thickness, shine, and texture of your hair. Experiencing hair loss can really damage your self confidence, but oftentimes when we see a change in hair thickness or texture it can be hard to get to the root cause. We asked Dr. Tess Marshall, ND, Nutrafol’s Director of Product Development & Marketing, what you can do to treat hair loss.

60+ Gift Ideas For Everyone On Your List

To understand how to treat hair thinning, we first need to understand the cause. While your individual cause depends on your lifestyle and pre-existing conditions, there are some common causes that are worth exploring. “Most commonly hair fallout is caused by six underlying factors. All of which can affect people differently.” Dr. Marshall says. These include: stress, hormone changes, metabolism, lifestyle, nutrition, and aging. Looking closely at your lifestyle, especially your diet and stress levels, is one thing that’s in your control. If you think something bigger may be at play, consult with your doctor to get the appropriate tests done to know for sure.

Supplements

Supplements can be a great support in bridging the gap between what you’re getting and what you’re missing. “Find a multi-targeting nutraceutical, like Nutrafol, to provide ingredients that clinically address each of the root causes mentioned previously for improved hair growth, visible thickness, and less shedding.”

Topical Treatments

While the best way to restore hair growth is to heal from the inside out, topical treatments can help nourish the hair and improve texture. “Try using a topical hair serum, like Growth Activator. This hair serum is applied to the scalp and promotes cell renewal with Ashwagandha Exosome technology. By increasing the turnover of cells, hair becomes visibly thicker and stronger.”

Eat a Nutritious Diet

Poor hair growth could be a sign that you aren’t getting enough essential vitamins and nutrients! “This is often overlooked, but the quality of food matters. We recommend eating 5-10 servings of vegetables and fruits plus protein with each meal.”

Relax!

Perhaps easier said than done, finding time to destress is one of the best things you can do for your whole body, not just your hair growth. You should try mindfulness exercises like yoga and meditation to unwind, as well as setting time aside for self care, whether that’s through getting active, spending time with friends, or doing hobbies you enjoy.

The most important thing to remember is to be patient—sometimes seeing results after you make these changes will take a long time. Getting hair growth back can be a long road, but the key is consistency. Eating well, prioritizing relaxation, and working closely with your doctor are all ways you can get to the root cause of your hair thinning and see long term results.
