One hot trend for Fall 2008 is the Russian doll/Slavic look, inspired by designers like Dolce and Gabbana, Anna Sui, and Gucci. The style is characterized by high-impact florals and paisley prints in rich jewel tones against stark black, vibrant plaids, studded belts, embroidery, and full skirts with folkloric motifs. Throw in some fur or a complementary scarf to complete the new East meets West boho look.
While hot on the pages of Vogue, this isn't the easiet thing to translate to Main Street, U.S.A.–babushka, anyone? To wear these garments without looking over the top, try these tips:
If your character can handle it, try out the look in all its glory with this Anna Sui number ($216.60, was $361). It's fresh and ultra girly, but can be toned down with a dark, neutral sweater, tall boots, and subtle accessories. A cheap but chic alternative is this Rampage Sheath dress for only $64.
If all out florals makes you squeamish, try belting this elegant tunic from Roberto Cavalli ($1755) or this simple V-neck tunic ($22.80) with contrasting embroidery from Forever 21.
For the less flamboyant, the way to go is small and tasteful. A bright floral scarf can be worn around the neck or as a shawl. Stars love 'em and when cool weather approaches, they'll be the perfect accompaniment to a fitted blazer. This particular floral pick from Target ($10) is an easy to buy bargain. Even easier to justify are these darling paisley printed bangles ($52, were $88) that add just a splash of color.
