Bow Ties Aren’t Just For Proms Anymore

For some reason, the neck region has become the area to accessorize for the past few fashion seasons, and this trend doesn't seem to be going away any time soon. In fact, it seems to be morphing, much like winter booties who turned into open-toed, slingbacked versions of themselves just in time for summer. So what's the latest around-the-neck-craze? Bow ties. But not necessarily the short, snappy ones your date wore to the prom – this new breed is long, lanky, and extremely nonchalant.

We've seen it take two forms: above, SJP sports a long, black ribbon tied around her neck, while Kate opts for a bow tie and blouse all in one. Either way, this trend is a classy mix of masculine and feminine, formality and laissez-faire. All in all, we're jumping right onboard.

It might be difficult to find a neck scarf that's skinny and light enough to create a good bow tie effect, so get those creative juices flowing and think outside the box. This cream creation by J. Jill ($15) is technically a belt, but the lightweight fabric and beaded detail make it the perfect sash to wear around your neck. And this patterned scarf ($7) is made for your head, but works perfectly for a bow.

If you're more the two-for-one kind of gal, a tie front blouse might be the perfect trend piece for you. It creates the illusion of a bow tie without any added fuss. This scarf tank by Cheap Monday (also available in white) is a steal at only $25. Pair with a sharp black blazer, and you'll have a work-appropriate outfit that can be taken out for drinks when the day is done. This chiffon Secretary blouse ($90, was $195)) takes a more formal approach to the trend, while this organza beaded blouse by Robert Rodriguez ($191.70, was $355) is by far the fanciest of the bunch.
