There has been a lot of speculation about Kate Middleton’s outfit for King Charles III’s coronation on Saturday, May 6th – including whether she would or wouldn’t wear a tiara. As The Court Jeweller blogger Lauren Kiehna predicted, the Princess of Wales, 41, did indeed choose to forgo the grand tiara for the historic event, and instead rocked a Jess Collett x Alexander McQueen headpiece that featured three-dimensional leaf embroidery.

The headpiece was designed by Jess Collett, who has been working as a couture milliner for the past 25 years after receiving a loan from King Charles’ charity, and was made with silver bullion, crystals, and silver thread. Anyone who laid eyes on the headpiece – and the Princess of Wales’ outfit in general – will agree that she still managed to steal the show, as she looked regal, elegant, and utterly breathtaking!

All eyes were quite rightly on the Princess of Wales when she arrived at Westminster Abbey, just as they were for the event’s dress rehearsal on May 3rd, which saw her wear an L.K. Bennett ‘Mortimer Black and White Fruity Floral Print’ dress that has, to nobody’s surprise, now sold out. And although To Di For Daily podcast host Kinsey Schofield previously told TalkTV that she was “aghast” and “offended” at the thought of Kate not wearing a tiara, we have a feeling that she would have approved of the Princess of Wales’ Jess Collett x Alexander McQueen headpiece!

Kate Middleton’s Coronation Outfit

As well as the dazzling headpiece, the rest of Princess Kate’s coronation outfit consisted of a custom Alexander McQueen ivory silk crepe dress with silver bullion and thread work embroidery featuring rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock motifs to signify the four nations of the United Kingdom. We’re obsessed with the attention to detail! Eight-year-old Princess Charlotte’s Alexander McQueen dress also had the same embroidery, and she twinned with her mom with her headpiece too, wearing a smaller version of the bespoke piece.

The Alexander McQueen dress was barely visible for the most part, as Princess Kate was draped in ceremonial robes to signify her position as a Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order. According to KateMiddletonStyle, the ensemble “comprises a mantle of blue and red satin that bears a representation of the order’s star on the left-hand side.” The website also mentioned the order’s insignia – “the Royal Victorian Order’s livery collar and the cross medallion hanging from the chain.”

The Princess Of Wales’ Coronation Jewelry

The Princess of Wales’ jewelry was also hugely significant, just as we expected it would be. She wore pearl and diamond earrings which once belonged to the late Princess Diana and were worn by her for special occasions. Princess Kate also wore the late Queen Elizabeth II’s George VI Festoon Necklace, which George VI commissioned for his daughter Princess Elizabeth in 1950. The three strand necklace was made using 105 loose collet-set diamonds, and was said to be one of the late Queen’s favorite pieces. Aww!
