Katy Perry‘s time as a judge on the twenty-first season of American Idol earned her both praise and criticism from viewers. Admirers on Twitter have appreciated her chic style and glamorous outfits, and she has been celebrated for her vocal stance on gun control.
Yet some have accused her of “bullying” or “shaming” some contestants, even comparing her to the abrasive former judge Simon Cowell (who judged on the FOX show from 2002 to 2010, before ABC re-booted it).
Since 2018, Perry has been a fixture of the show, and recently ABC announced that she would return, alongside her co-stars Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, for the 22nd season of American Idol. Ryan Seacrest will also host once again.
Fan reactions are divided yet again, as some are taking to Twitter to share that they are happy Perry is returning. Others are less than thrilled, as want her to release new music instead!

One fan tweeted, after news broke that Perry will come back to American Idol: "I just want new katy perry music not another season of american idol pls." Someone else agreed, writing: "okay but when is she getting into the studio?" Another chimed in: "Did she retire from making music?"
Others seemed to refer to her more controversial moments on the show, with one commenting: "Hope she changes her bad behavior and stops being mean to some contestants." Another viewer concurred: "it seems like @katyperry is a mean girl to these contestants on @AmericanIdol."
Even still, others expressed their joy at their "favorite" judge coming back for another season. "That's great news!! There will be lots of fun!!" one wrote as someone added that they loved seeing Perry, Richie and Bryan interact, deeming them "perfect together" as judges.
For six years, Perry, Richie and Bryan have all served as judges for American Idol. Seacrest has been the host since its inception, but after he landed the summer spot of Wheel of Fortune host following Pat Sajak's retirement, fans wondered if he would return for the following season.
It was also unclear if Perry would be back, as speculation arose in the past few months that she wanted to "quit" the program. Reports went viral that claimed she was displeased with the way producers depicted her to viewers.
