Losing Large Amounts Of Hair? Doctors Recommend Switching To Shampoos Without These 2 Ingredients

Noticing more hair than usual in your brush or shower drain can be unsettling, but there are plenty of reasons hair can go through periods of increased shedding or breakage. While your shampoo may not be the underlying cause of true hair loss, the products you use can affect how your hair and scalp look and feel. Certain ingredients may be too drying or irritating for some people, leaving already-fragile strands more vulnerable to breakage.

Making a few simple changes to your hair-care routine can help you treat your strands more gently. Choosing a mild shampoo that cleanses without excessively stripping the hair or scalp can be a great place to start, particularly if your hair feels dry, brittle, or easily damaged. Doctors and hair experts often recommend taking a closer look at ingredient labels and considering formulas without these two ingredients when excessive breakage or shedding has become a concern.

1. Sulfates

Sulfates are cleansing agents that help shampoo create that satisfying, foamy lather, but they can sometimes be too aggressive—especially if your hair is already dry, fragile, or shedding more than usual. Strong sulfates, like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), can strip away natural oils from the scalp and hair, leaving strands drier and more prone to breakage. While sulfates themselves aren't generally considered a direct cause of hair loss, switching to a gentler, sulfate-free cleanser may help protect weakened hair, reduce breakage, and keep the scalp's moisture barrier more comfortable while you're dealing with increased shedding.

2. Harsh Alcohols

Not all alcohols in shampoo are bad—in fact, fatty alcohols like cetyl and stearyl alcohol can actually help condition hair—but certain short-chain alcohols can be drying when they're used in large amounts. These harsher alcohols can leave already vulnerable strands feeling brittle and more susceptible to snapping. If you're experiencing hair loss or excessive shedding, choosing moisturizing formulas that minimize harsh, drying alcohols can help preserve the hair you have and reduce the appearance of thinning caused by breakage.
