Melania Trump was slammed as the “worst mother” in the country by Democratic podcast host Jennifer Welch, amid reports that Barron Trump, the 20-year-old son she shares with President Donald Trump, has formed a connection with controversial influencer Andrew Tate, who previously claimed he is “very close” to the Trump family.
Welch made the comments about the first lady’s parenting on The Don Lemon Show on Friday, July 24th, just days after Andrew and his brother Tristan Tate were arrested in Miami as they face extradition to the U.K. The brothers, who have faced legal proceedings in several countries, are fighting extradition over dozens of British charges, including rape and sex trafficking, which they deny.
The controversy surrounding their connections to the Trump family has also reached Congress. Democratic Rep. Yassamin Ansari recently called for the House Oversight Committee to investigate the Tates’ reported ties to the Trump family and whether those relationships influenced the handling of their legal cases.
Jennifer Welch Slams Melania Trump Over Barron’s Reported Connection To The Tate Brothers
Discussing reports that Barron has a personal connection with Andrew and Tristan Tate, Welch said: “Melania Trump is this country’s worst mother. And I’m going to go on record. The biggest deadbeat mother in the United States of America is Melania Trump!”
“Barron is close personal friends with the Tate brothers. And that to me is just completely failed parenting. If my sons said that they were listening to, watching, or liked Andrew Tate, hell hath no fury. I would grab the ear, would ground them, I would take away their phones. This is a parenting thing.”
“Barron is my youngest son’s age. And it’s out there in the world. I mean, he has said, Andrew Tate, I’m very close with Barron and the Trump boys. We all know Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dip[expletive], Dumb and Dumber,” Welch laughed, referring to Don Jr. and Eric Trump. “Of course they’re all, of course they love [Andrew Tate.] But Melania, what a [expletive] mother she is to not correct this or make a statement about this,” she added.

Although Welch described Barron and the Tate brothers as "close personal friends," it's not clear how accurate that characterization actually is. The New York Times previously reported that Barron admired Andrew Tate and spoke with him over Zoom in 2024 alongside a mutual friend. According to that friend, Barron was a "big fan" of the Tates, and they reportedly discussed the criminal case against the brothers in Romania during the call.
Tate himself has also publicly claimed to have a close relationship with the Trump family. According to Forbes, Tate said he spoke to Barron following the 2024 assassination attempt against Donald Trump, telling reporters: "I'm very close with the Trump family. I know them well."

Social Media Users React To Jennifer Welch's Comments
Many social media users appeared to agree with Welch's criticism, with one writing on X: "One of my students mentioned Andrew Tate years ago so I went home and asked my then teenaged son about him. He quickly told me how vile and disgusting that man was and that he had him blocked on every platform. That was a very proud mom day for me."
"What does anyone expect from Melania Trump she was a [expletive] escort," alleged a second, while a third questioned: "Didn't Melania pose nude and possibly was a call girl? And, Barron's Dad is a convicted serial abuser. These are the role models Barron grew up with." "Another failed parenting example," added a fourth.
Not everyone felt the same way, though, as others defended Melania and questioned Welch's comments as well as the extent of Barron's reported relationship with the Tates.
"Jennifer Welch is a judgmental and hate-filled 'woman.' The inside shines on the outside and it is not pretty!" wrote one X user. "This is such a wild accusation. Has anyone actually seen Barron with the Tates or is this just internet speculation?" asked a second. "Welp. He's 20. His connection to them is alleged and at some point you no longer get to tell your kids how to run their lives," noted a third.
"Barron is an adult. His mother brought him up well," thought a fourth, as a fifth said: "Barron has done nothing to deserve these attacks on his character and neither has Melania." A sixth claimed: "Close personal friends? He talked to Andrew once on a zoom call. They've never even met. This woman needs her teeth slapped clean out of her mouth."

Melania Trump's Parenting Has Previously Sparked Debate
This isn't the first time Melania's parenting has been called into question. Earlier this year, reports claimed that Barron's older half-siblings – Don Jr., Eric, Ivanka, and Tiffany – weren't invited to his 20th birthday party, which was reportedly Melania's decision because Donald Trump's children from previous relationships aren't particularly close with Barron.
"They're not close – at all. This wasn't an oversight. They were left off the list," an insider reportedly told Rob Shuter's Naughty But Nice Substack at the time, adding: "Barron didn't grow up with them in the same way. There isn't a real bond there."
Some people have also accused the first lady of babying her son due to comments she has made about him in the past. If you recall, Melania mentioned "being there" for Barron, who was 19 at the time and studying at NYU, "nonstop" during an interview on Fox News earlier this year.
"You need to be there for a child nonstop, especially when they need you, especially at that age that Barron is," Melania said. "He's an incredible young man, we are very proud of him. Second year in Stern School of Business, and he loves it," she added.
X users didn't hold back, with one person writing at the time: "She's talking about him like he's 5." A second asked: "Is he that helpless that he needs constant supervision at 19?" "The last thing most 19-year-olds want is their mother tied to their hip," slammed a third.
