Pink has inserted herself into the controversy surrounding Macklemore and Ed Sheeran, and fans are calling for her removal as a UNICEF ambassador because of it. After Macklemore was dropped as an opener for Ed Sheeran on his Loop Tour, Pink came out as supportive of the decision, and she’s been met with a lot of backlash. Keep reading for more information.

Pink Criticizes Macklemore For Pro-Palestine Speech

During Macklemore's opening set at Ed Sheeran's MetLife Stadium concert earlier this month, he gave a political speech supporting Palestinians and performed his pro-Palestinian protest song. The act was immediately controversial: some fans accused Macklemore of turning the concert into a political rally and called some of the imagery and rhetoric he used "antisemitic." Others defended Macklemore and said he was using his platform to advocate for Palestinian human rights.

Shortly after, Pink got involved by reposting a social media post criticizing Macklemore's performance. After receiving signifiant backlash, Pink took things a step future and defended her choice, saying that Macklemore "stood in front of a stadium full of music-loving families, with violent images from a war on the screens, dedicated a song to the movement of his choice, and then took the mic to tell all of the Jews in the stadium that it wasn’t about them."

"You don't get that to decide that for us," she wrote in the caption of her Instagram post.

"That’s what prompted my repost," she continued. "Not 'Free Palestine,' and not anyone’s right to say it. I have never asked for another artist to be silenced and I’m not asking now. I don’t need anyone fired, and I don’t need a refund. What I need is to be able to say, as a Jewish mom, 'that scared me, and it scared people I love,' without being told our fear is just propaganda, and without being told I’m somehow cool with genocide because I noticed?"

Social Media Reactions

Across social media platforms, users were quick to cancel Pink for her comments, and even started a petition on Change.org to have her removed as a UNICEF ambassador, saying "an ambassador should unify, not divide," and calling her criticism "a disheartening display of divisiveness and hatred."

"UNICEF ambassador?" one person wrote on Instagram. "She became the opposite of that."

"Where do I sign??" commented another.

"Is she for real?" asked the next. "I'm immediately signing the petition."

"A genocide supporter shouldn't be UNICEF ambassador," added another. "Shocking hypocrisy."

"I never could’ve thought Pink would die this way," said one user. "She’s always been so progressive."

"Where do I sign please?" a final user asked. "I was a big fan of Pink but no longer supporting her."
