Extreme temperatures and certain conditions can be hostile to your iPhone, to the point where things like heat, UV light, and water can damage your phone beyond repair. On major problem is that our phones are ever-present in our lives, and something as simple as placing it on a kitchen counter can leave it vulnerable to water damage if we aren’t extremely vigil. While it’s a fact of life that water damage can be a common issue for smartphones, taking the right steps can help minimize the risk and potential damage, according to Tech Expert Jon Morgan, CEO of VentureSmarter. Here are some of his recommendations, including his top tip for protecting your iPhone from water damage.

Use a waterproof case

Investing in a high-quality waterproof case can provide an extra layer of protection for your iPhone. “Make sure the case is designed specifically for your iPhone model and has a high waterproof rating,” Morgan says.

One to try: The Temdan Waterproof iPhone Case, which offers IP 68 water protection and has been tested and proven to resist damage from drops of up to 14 feet.

Avoid water exposure

The best way to keep your phone safe is to keep it far from water, plain and simple. “It’s best to keep your iPhone away from water sources like pools, sinks, and open containers,” Morgan says. “Be cautious in outdoor environments, especially during rain or near bodies of water.”

If you’re participating in water-related activities such as swimming, boating, or hiking near waterfalls, Morgan suggests ensuring your iPhone is securely stored in a waterproof case or a sealed plastic bag to prevent accidental water damage.

Never submerge your iPhone intentionally

While some newer iPhone models have increased water resistance, it’s important to remember they are not fully waterproof, Morgan says, and that submerging your iPhone intentionally can still lead to water damage.

What If your phone gets wet?

Let’s say the damage has already been done — your phone got wet and now you want to perform fast triage on it to keep it safe. Here are some steps that Morgan suggests taking:

Retrieve your iPhone from water immediately: The longer your iPhone stays submerged, the higher the chances of water damage. Act quickly to minimize potential harm, Morgan notes.

Power off your iPhone: Press and hold the power button until the ‘Slide to power off’ option appears, and then swipe to turn off your iPhone. This helps prevent short circuits that can occur when water comes into contact with electrical components.

Dry the exterior: Use a clean, soft cloth or towel to gently wipe off any visible moisture from the exterior of the iPhone. Avoid shaking the device, as it may push water further inside.

Remove any attached accessories: Take off any cases, covers, or accessories and dry them separately. This allows better airflow and reduces the chances of trapped moisture.

Avoid using heat sources: While it may be tempting to use a hairdryer or place your iPhone near a heater, heat can potentially damage the internal components. It's best to let your iPhone air dry naturally.

Place your iPhone in a dry environment: Find a well-ventilated area with low humidity and let your iPhone sit in this environment for at least 24-48 hours. Placing it near a fan or using a desiccant like uncooked rice or silica gel packets can help expedite the drying process.

Test your iPhone: After allowing sufficient drying time, power on your iPhone and check if it functions properly. If any issues persist, it's recommended to contact Apple Support or visit an authorized service center for further assistance.
