Charging your phone should be the easiest thing you do all day. You may be wondering: what more is there to think about then just plugging in your device and leaving it there to charge to 100 percent? Actually, there is more to consider — and not knowing the correct way to charge your phone can lead to a diminished battery and a device that doesn’t work as effectively. Tech Expert Michael Miller, CEO of VPN Online, shares info you need to know when it comes to the surprising charging mistake that’s actually ruining your iPhone battery.

Overnight Charging

According to Miller, it’s no secret that iPhone batteries don’t last as long as they used to, and there are a lot of theories about why that is. “But one of the most common battery-sapping mistakes people make is charging their phone overnight,” Miller says.

Charging your iPhone overnight might be convenient, but it’s actually not the best way to charge it, Miller shares. “In fact, if you charge your phone for too long, you can damage its battery and shorten its life.”

Leaving your iPhone plugged in after it's been fully charged is one of the worst charging mistakes you can make. “That's because when your phone is fully charged, iOS starts to smooth out the power delivery to the battery,” Miller says. “And by doing so, it prevents your phone from charging completely all the way to 100%. As a result, if you leave your phone plugged in after it's been fully charged, you're basically just wasting electricity and slowly draining your battery.”

The best way to charge your iPhone is to plug it in when it's around 20-30% charged and then unplug it when it's 100%, Miller confirms.

It might be better to provide your phone with short charging bursts throughout the day rather than waiting until night to charge while you sleep.
