Dry shampoo can seem like a saving grace to people with naturally oily or thin hair. Whether you use it in your regular routine or just on the occasions when you’re on a time crunch, dry shampoo is perfect for soaking up excess grease for a more fresh and clean appearance to your hair.

But have you ever stopped to question why dry shampoo actually works so well? Most things that seem too good to be true, tend to be just that: too good to be true. So why aren’t we looking closer into dry shampoo to see if it is actually helping or harming our hair?

As it turns out, dry shampoo isn't bad for you if you're only using it once in a while. Which is actually what these products are intended for - occasional use.

Dry shampoo works by soaking up excess oil with the use of alcohol, leaving your hair looking and feeling cleaner than before. Yet many of us are familiar with the debate of alcohol in beauty products.

Alcohol is extremely drying. This isn't always a bad thing, especially when you're looking to soak up excess oil. But too much of alcohol - or any drying ingredients, for that matter - can be harmful to your hair by depleting it of the nutrients it actually needs.

Celebrity cosmetic dermatologist and uthor of The Pro-Aging Playbook, Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank, agrees. He also mentioned that over-using dry shampoo may even lead to breakage and thinning in your hair.

Dr. Frank tells SheFinds, "Dry shampoo isn’t necessarily bad if used sparingly. Too much dry shampoo can lead to breakage and clog pores, which in time increases inflammation and can potentially cause hair thinning."

Try to limit your use of dry shampoo to no more than once a week - even better if you can get down to only using it once or twice a month. The last thing any of us would want is to end up with thinning hair when we're just trying to achieve a healthier look.
