Chicago may not have Bryant Park or Rodeo Drive, but we do have a mayor who’s ready to put this city on the fashion map once and for all. Mayor Daley has hired attorney-turned-fashionista Melissa Turner as Chicago’s first Fashion Director, and not one but two fashion-focused weeks are in the works for Fall.
City-sponsored Fashion Focus Chicago, Sept. 20 – Oct. 1, puts the “chic†in Chicago by spotlighting local designers and swanky locales. Four runway shows, including Gen Art’s Fresh Faces in Fashion (Sept. 25), will take place in Millennium Park’s Rooftop Terrace. The week culminates in Macy’s Glamorama 2006: Glamosphere on Sept. 29. Beyoncé takes the stage at the Chicago Theater as models sporting Marc Jacobs, Just Cavalli, and Badgley Mischka get fierce on the runway.
Chicago Fashion Week (Oct. 15-21) has a hip, more organic vibe. Highlights include the Don’t Blink makeup artists’ competition, with awards granted in Creative, Outrageous, Conventional, and Before-and-After categories, and Self-Indulgence, a bazaar-like tribute to accessories, “because you can never have enough hats, gloves, shoes, watches, scarves, jewels…â€
