Jessica Chastain is turning heads with a dramatic hair transformation for C Magazine’s Fall 2026 issue, but while the actress received praise for her fashion throughout the shoot, her new bob has become the subject of plenty of criticism online.
For the magazine cover, the Interstellar actress traded her signature long locks for a chin-length strawberry-blonde bob. The cut was styled with a sharp center part, subtle waves and volume around the ears, creating a completely different look for the actress.
The shorter style also comes as bob haircuts continue to dominate beauty trends heading into fall, making Chastain’s transformation feel right on cue for the season.

However, not everyone was impressed with the styling. Fans on Reddit had plenty to say about the dramatic departure from her usual long hair, with some comparing the cut to Lord Farquaad, the fictional character from Shrek.
“She looks undeniably beautiful but it needs bangs! The styling of the hair is just very off,” one person wrote.
Another admitted, “I’m sorry but the bob is not doing her favors. she looks aged. her long mane was a literal shampoo commercial mane. but, she looks graceful, modern and powerful in these.”
“Jessica is one of my favorite actors and style icons but the lord farquaad haircut needs to be banned,” another commenter said.
Others criticized the shape of the cut, with one writing, “The way it's squeezed on the top and then poofs out at the bottom is just not flattering at all.”
“She has beautiful hair. This does not do it justice,” another person added.
“What is this hair??? It’s awful,” one critic bluntly wrote.
Another joked, “The Lord Farquaad cut is really something.”
One Reddit user took issue with the overall styling, writing, “The severity of the middle-parted bob with waves looks like she just got out of the shower or woke up with greasy hair and she hasn’t fixed it yet. It looks flat and lifeless.”

Despite the mixed reaction to her hair, the 49-year-old appears to be embracing plenty of dramatic transformations both on and off screen.
The actress is currently gearing up for the release of her upcoming horror movie, Other Mommy, which is scheduled to hit theaters on Oct. 9.
“I want to tell stories about women who are complicated, who are flawed, who are messy,” Chastain told C Magazine.
In the film, she plays a mother who is forced to protect her daughter from a sinister supernatural entity that bears an unsettling resemblance to her.
Her character also allows Chastain to explore a much darker kind of transformation than her latest bob. Speaking about the types of roles she enjoys, she said, “I like playing characters who aren’t the perfect wife, mother, partner. I like thorny edges because that’s what life is.”
While fans may be divided over her new hairstyle, Jessica is clearly continuing to push herself creatively, taking on characters that are far removed from the polished image often associated with Hollywood stars.
