Never Click This Type Of Link—It Could Expose Your Data To Hackers

In today’s digital world, it feels like we click on at least ten links a day while online, but now that comes with a risk.

These days, it’s almost impossible to go a day without sending or receiving a link, whether it’s a funny video from a friend, a shopping deal, or an important email from a company you do business with. Unfortunately, hackers and scammers are sending links, too, and some can lead to dangerous websites designed to steal your personal information. That’s why it’s important to know which links to avoid clicking. Read more about the type of link tech pros suggest avoiding below.

The Type Of Link To Avoid Clicking On

Scams are also becoming more sophisticated, which can make them much harder to recognize at first glance. Instead of the obvious spelling mistakes and suspicious messages of older scams, today's phishing attempts can look surprisingly legitimate and may even create a sense of urgency to convince you to act quickly.

Hackers and scammers have also gotten better at mimicking legitimate emails, making it possible for a fake message to look like it came from your bank, insurance company, a retailer you use, or even a friend or family member. A familiar name or logo doesn't necessarily mean the message is actually from the person or company it claims to be. The link could come with an 'urgent' message to change a password or log in to your account, but lead you to something more malicious.

"A phishing email may contain a link that appears to lead to your bank, email provider, or another familiar service but actually directs you to a fake website designed to steal your credentials or other sensitive information," explains cybersecurity pro Stephanie Schneider. "Before clicking, hover over links and look closely at the destination. If you have any doubts about a link's veracity, navigate directly to an organization's website or app instead. A password manager can provide another layer of protection because it generally won't autofill credentials on an unfamiliar or fraudulent website."

When in doubt, don't click the link. Instead, go directly to the company's official website or app to check the message yourself.
