The Scary Mistake You Keep Making When Powering Off Your iPhone X

“If someone tries to power off an iPhone X using the’ iPhone 8 or earlier’ method, Siri will start listening for a command,” technologist Bree Bengle with global tech services company Asurion explains to SheFinds.

“The same thing will happen if someone tries to use the ‘iPad with a home button’ steps to turn off an iPad with Face ID.”

This might seem obvious, but if you’re gifting a new iPhone X to a family member whose tech capabilities are on the lighter side (hey, grandma!) this is definitely worth explaining for them.

Bengle provided step by step instructions for how to power your iPhone off, depending on the model:

The Right Way To Power Off Your Devices:

iPhone X or later:

Press and hold the side button and either volume buttons until the power off slider appears on screen

Drag the slider to the right

The device will power off

iPhone 8 or earlier (and iPod Touch):

Press and hold the side button* until the power off slider appears on screen

Drag the slider to the right

The device will power off

 

* iPhone 5S and earlier have a top button instead of a side button.

iPad with Face ID

Press and hold the top button and either volume button until the power off slider appears on screen

Drag the slider to the right

The device will power off

iPad with a Home Button

Press and hold the top button until the power off slider appears

Drag the slider to the right

The device will power off

Any iOS device running iOS 11 or later

Open Settings

Go to General

Tap Shut Down

The power off slider will appear.

Drag the slider to the right

The device will power off.
