How can you tell whether your iPhone is about to conk out — right before you’re about to leave the house and will need it most? Simple: check its battery health for a fast glimpse into the state of its power supply so that you can determine whether you should charge your phone now or wait a bit. Battery Health is a helpful setting, but you’ll need to know how to access it and read its results. Here’s how to find out the battery health of your iPhone, according to tech experts.

Finding out the battery health of an iPhone

“Today, iPhone has become the style statement and a must-have in the consumer market, as the phone is stylish, sturdy, and secure,” says William Cannon, CEO and founder of Uplead. “However, the battery back-ups have been a concern in all the iPhone models, in spite of Apple improving their battery capacities in their recent models. So, every user wants to learn the battery health of their phone.”

To find out the battery health of an iPhone, Cannon advises users to go to the Settings Menu and select the Battery option. “Inside the battery menu, select ‘Battery Health’ to find the exact battery health in terms of percentage,” Cannon says. “Battery health denotes the actual capacity of the battery to store the power, after a certain level of usage. Battery health of above 80% is considered to be the best performance.”

Unfortunately, maintaining the perfect charging zone for your iPhone involves a bit more than just plugging in your device and leaving it to charge for hours or overnight (which you should never do). “iPhone batteries lose a certain amount of storage capacity every time they are recharged and the battery health reaches 80% after recharging it around 400 to 500 times,” Cannon says. “In addition, frequent discharge up to zero or overcharging may also affect the overall life of the battery. So, users should avoid overnight charging or leaving the phone without charging till zero charges.”

In order to improve the performance of your iPhone battery, Cannon instead recommends that you use the phone only when it is needed, keep the phone updated, and regularly close the background apps on the phone.
