Sandra Bullock Opens Up About Bryan Randall's Private ALS Battle During Podcast Interview

The Practical Magic 2 star, as part of her return to Hollywood, is beginning to open up a lot more about the death of her partner, which she previously kept out of the public eye.

She and the photographer began dating in 2015, eventually entering a serious relationship where they raised her two children together, Louis and Laila, as well as his daughter, Skylar, from a previous marriage. Bryan was privately diagnosed with ALS and battled the progressive disease for three years before dying at age 57 in August 2023. His family confirmed at the time through his death announcement that he had chosen to keep his illness private, a request the actress worked to honor.

Now, the Oscar-winner is giving fans a much closer look at what that period was like. During her latest appearance on SmartLess, which is hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes, in an episode being made available to SiriusXM early access subscribers this week, Sandra spoke openly about her late partner's illness, the "traumatic diagnosis," and how she felt isolated by it due to having to keep things tight-lipped.

"I wasn't allowed to speak about it," she recalled. "That was the request, and I tried - I honored it. I know why he asked me not [to]." She later added that having to keep his illness a secret from some friends and members of the public added a "huge weight."

Sandra Discusses The Impact Bryan's Death Had On Her Family

In recent reports, insiders claimed the famous performer was still processing her grief, getting to the point where she was purposefully "closing herself off." But during her interview, the mom-of-two opened up about her initial reactions as well as how the illness gradually had an impact on Bryan, making him slowly less and less like himself.

"I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed...[He] was ill for half of our relationship," she revealed to the podcast hosts. "My person left a lot earlier than the body left."

The Miss Congeniality star explained that she had to quietly prepare for the progression of her partner's disease while caring for their family, including two young children who were also navigating his declining health, citing former losses in her life that helped her enter that mindset.

"You have to quietly plan," she admitted. "And I'm a very good planner with illness. It doesn't scare me - not the illness itself; it doesn't scare me. I can see and be around just about anything. But I had two young kids that were navigating it, especially a little girl who saw [Bryan] as a father figure."

The actress also opened up about the emotional toll of carrying such a heavy secret that was his diagnosis. Then, she began opening up to friends, including podcast host Jason Bateman's wife, Amanda Anka, and fellow performer Jennifer Aniston.

"When the physical illness was then coupled with the mental health aspect of things...and it's something that people don't talk about…it was a trifecta that was pretty dark," she added.
