Randy Jackson Made A Surprise Appearance On ‘American Idol’ This Season
Though he’s currently one of the faces of the entertaining Name That Tune game show, the bass guitarist returned to his television roots in early May after guest-starring on an episode of this past American Idol season.
The former show judge of 11 years was part of the show’s “Class of 2006” reunion, which celebrated 20 years since the show’s fifth season. He reunited with fellow original judge Paula Abdul and acted as a mentor to the season 24 contestants, including Hannah Harper, Jordan McCullough, Keyla Richardson, Braden Rumfelt, and Chris Tungseth. He also offered the aspiring singers advice from his years of experience on the show, including asking contestants whether they were “in it to win.”
While the reunion was a nostalgic moment for Idol fans, many couldn’t help but notice how different Randy looked compared with his years on-air at the judges’ table. The executive appeared noticeably slimmer as he stepped back into his role, and his transformation quickly became a big talking point for viewers who remembered him from the show’s earlier seasons.

Fans React To Randy's Weight Loss On Social Media
The show host's transformation has been getting more dramatic year by year, as he began his health journey in 2003, marking over two decades of working towards good health. In magazine interviews, Randy revealed that he underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2003 after realizing he had weighed more than 350 pounds and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The procedure ultimately helped him lose 114 pounds, and he's surely lost more since then, but hasn't given out the exact number. He told People the surgery was a "jump starter" for his health journey, while also emphasizing that maintaining his weight loss required lasting changes to his eating habits and lifestyle.
"I hate the word diet," he told the above publication in 2022. "I don't use that anymore. Anybody that's lost weight, you lose it, and then you start eating and drinking more, and it all starts coming back. That's what started happening to me. I was like, 'No, I'm not going to spend my life going through this.'"
He has also spoken publicly about prioritizing his gut health and co-founded nutrition brand Unify Health Labs, which focuses on healthy lifestyle choices and supporting the gut microbiome. Jackson has said that maintaining his weight has involved eating healthier and paying attention to his gut health.
"The root causes of these certain diseases and trying to get your best health, it all starts in the gut," he told People. "Gut health is really best health."
Now, social media users can't get over how different he looks, expressing their amazement under posts with recent photos of him.
"He is unrecognizable," wrote a user on Instagram.
"That can't be Randy!" a user commented.
"He feels good, his weight is stable, and his diabetes is managed," responded a fan. "At the end of the day, that's what truly matters."
"That's not the same guy," wrote another.
