Prince William Was Reportedly 'Fuming' After Queen Camilla Told Kate Middleton To Change The Spelling Of Her Name, Royal Expert Reveals: 'Insulting'

A royal author has revealed that Prince William reportedly wasn’t willing to let a seemingly small request about Kate Middleton’s name go without a fight.

According to royal author Christopher Andersen, the future king was reportedly “fuming” after then-Prince Charles and Queen Camilla asked his wife, Kate Middleton, to consider changing the official spelling of her first name from Catherine to Katherine when she joined the royal family. The unusual request was allegedly connected to the royal couple’s concern over having too many “C” initials appearing in royal monograms. While the issue may sound small, Andersen claims that William viewed it as an insult to his wife and her family. Read more about the situation with the name change request below.

King Charles And Queen Camilla Reportedly Asked Kate Middleton To Change Her Name

What started as a concern over royal initials reportedly turned into a surprisingly personal issue for Kate Middleton.

In his new biography, Kate! The Courage, Grace, and Power of the Woman Who Will Be Queen, royal author Christopher Andersen claims that King Charles III and Queen Camilla suggested that the future queen change the spelling of her full name from "Catherine" to "Katherine." The reason they wanted to do so has surprised some fans of the royal family, as it's more superficial than expected. At the time, Charles and Camilla reportedly each had a royal monogram featuring interlocking C's beneath a crown, and they were concerned that adding another royal cypher beginning with C would be "overkill."

Andersen claims the couple expected Kate to go along with the request because of her reputation for being cooperative and accommodating. However, he noted that her in-laws were seemingly ignoring that she preferred to be known as Catherine and felt strongly about the name her parents had given her.

"Changing her formal given name for such a bizarre, almost comical reason was a bridge too far," he wrote.

Prince William Was Reportedly 'Fuming' Over The Name Change Request

For the Prince of Wales, the request reportedly crossed a line, and he wasn't about to let his wife's name be changed for something like a monogram.

Andersen claims William was "fuming" over the suggestion and actually responded on his wife's behalf, telling his father that the request was "insulting" not only to Kate but to her entire family. The author added that the incident was another example of him defending his wife when he believed she was being treated unfairly by his family members.

"The request was nothing less than 'insulting,' he told his father, not only to Kate but to her entire family," the author claimed.

The author also pointed out that this isn't the first example of the dad-of-three being protective of his wife, as aside from looking out for her at public events, he's sought to ensure that the Princess of Wales wasn't given too heavy a royal workload after they started a family, particularly when it could mean spending too much time away from their children.
