'Find And Pursue Crimes' Related To Trump, Letitia James Allegedly Orders

New York Assistant Attorney General Daniel Wiesenfeld met with federal prosecutors for "several hours" on Tuesday, according to insider sources. The former Brooklyn prosecutor and lawyer in James' office is claiming that he was instructed by his supervisor, Shamiso Maswoswe, to "find and pursue crimes committed by specific individuals and organizations affiliated with Donald Trump." He named Trump himself, Truth Social, and Hewlett-Packard among the targets.

Wiesenfeld also claimed that this directive was pushed even if there was no credible reason to look into any person or organization.

Wiesenfeld first called attention to the subject with an email sent to roughly 2,000 employees, though it was quickly deleted from the Attorney General's systems. "If you believe Trump is using [DOJ] attorneys to prosecute his enemies and further his political interests, you should find it equally troubling that Tish [James] is doing exactly the same thing," his email read in part.

Wiesenfeld's point here is that investigations are supposed to be evidence-driven, not person driven. It raises the possibility of political targeting: Trump is a large political opponent of Attorney General Letitia James, so if prosecutors were specifically told to search for criminal conduct because someone was affiliated with Trump, rather than because there was evidence of a crime, that could make the law-enforcement process look like a political weapon—exactly what Democrats are accusing Republicans of doing.

"I ask that you not serve as Tish’s personal attorneys by targeting her political enemies," his email continued. "Instead, I hope you choose to prosecute crimes and find the individuals accountable, rather than targeting individuals and then finding crimes."

James' office reacted quickly, called the scandal "a personnel matter."

"The office of the attorney general is committed to upholding New York’s laws and protecting the rights and freedoms of all New Yorkers, regardless of political beliefs," a statement reads. "We strongly reject any assertion to the contrary."
