One of the benefits of owning Apple products is that you can seamlessly synch information from one device to another. Once you write a note on your iPhone, for example, it will appear on you MacBook Air — and the same goes for emails and photos, assuming you take the time to occasionally connect the devices and get them in sync. But it’s just as important to avoid some common mistakes when you’re trying to transfer files over. Alina Clark, growth manager and co-founder of CocoDoc, spoke to SHEFinds.com about the worst mistake you can make when syncing your iPhone.

You’re Running Outdated Software

It’s easy to neglect software updates — you’re probably so busy throughout the day that it’s the last thing on your mind. While you can live without updating your phone for a fairly long time without it affecting much, the same can’t be said she it comes to syncing your devices.

“Trying to sync your iPhone while still running outdated software leads to the largest number of syncing errors in my experience,” Clark says. “In fact, it’s more than likely that your iPhone will completely refuse to sync, even despite your best efforts, if you forget to update the software.”

iTunes is by far the most common stumbling block to your syncing process, Clark reveals. “Running an older iTune version during the syncing process might pose a challenge to the whole process,” Clark says. “Even though the chances of running an outdated iTunes version are quite slim on a new iPhone, they’re quite high if you’re using an iPhone 6. Just like any other software that needs updating, you should update iTunes from the ‘help’ section on Windows if you’re using iTunes on Windows for that matter.”

Trying to sync iTunes while your Apple Music is on also inhibits the syncing process.

“iTunes, almost bizarrely, conflicts with Apple music in some instances,” Clark says. “Switching off Apple music from your phone might clear the syncing error should you come across it.”

And one last reminder before you sync your iPhone with your computer or another device — don’t unplug your charging cable until the entire process is finished. Unplugging  too soon can lead to lost data and a whole lot of wasted time. Keep your software updated and be patient for the best syncing results.
