Charging an iPhone might seem like a straightforward process; however, there are actually a few mistakes you can make while doing it.

iPhones are incredibly high tech and convenient, but like any smartphone, their batteries aren’t impenetrable or invincible. That’s why it’s always best to practice healthy, productive charging habits. There are a lot of good habits out there, but there are also lots of bad ones. Read more about one charging mistake that tech pros say can damage your iPhone’s battery below.

The Charging Mistake That Can Damage Your iPhone's Battery

iPhones are pretty remarkable little machines, and it's safe to assume that anyone who owns one typically relies on it and uses it for hours throughout the day.

Because you likely need your iPhone for hours each day, it's imperative that you keep its battery healthy and functioning for as long as possible. This might sound like simply plugging it in to charge several times throughout the day. However, there are some ways people go about charging their phone that can actually end up harming its battery over time, potentially leading to the need for a replacement.

You might be under the impression that you can wait to charge your iPhone until it hits 0% battery life. But tech pros have stated that you actually don't want that happening all the time.

"One of the bad habits we see is when people allow their iPhone’s battery to deplete to zero before charging it regularly," says tech pro Steven Athwal. "Lithium-ion batteries don’t like to discharge too low; in fact, the chemistry in the battery gets stressed when it reaches low voltage levels. It’s for this reason that we see batteries in iPhones that are constantly drained to zero capacity need replacement early in their lifespan."

"Repeatedly draining your battery to 0% stresses it even more," adds expert Michael Crapis. "Lithium-ion batteries are healthiest when kept between roughly 20% and 80%. Staying in that mid-range significantly extends long-term battery capacity and overall device lifespan."
