Usha Vance made headlines after narrowly avoiding a fall while descending the stairs of Marine Two at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on October 5th, with her newborn son strapped to her chest. And despite the frightening moment, the second lady still managed to look effortlessly elegant in a plaid midi skirt and knee-high heeled boots.
The 40-year-old second lady was captured losing her footing near the bottom of the helicopter stairs while carrying her 11-week-old son, Alec, whom she shares with Vice President JD Vance. Thankfully, she managed to grab the handrail and regain her balance, preventing them both from falling. Phew! However, the footage has sparked criticism online, with viewers questioning why the nearby airmen didn’t step in to help her.

Usha Vance Wears Plaid Midi Skirt And Knee-High Boots For Family Trip To Alaska
Usha, who also shares sons Ewan, 9, and Vivek, 6, and daughter Mirabel, 4, with the vice president, was dressed in a chic outfit consisting of a flowing, high-waisted plaid midi skirt, a simple brown top, and knee-high brown heeled boots.
She accessorized the neutral-toned ensemble with a baby carrier, which kept little Alec securely strapped to her chest, and appeared to have a bag slung over her shoulder. According to reported lip-reading accounts cited by Hello!, Usha appeared to tell the nearby service members waiting on the tarmac: “I nearly fell down stairs. I’m okay, and he’s fine.”
The mom-of-four was then seen smiling and tending to her baby, seemingly unfazed by the incident. Vice President JD Vance, who reportedly didn’t witness the slip, emerged from the helicopter moments later carrying their four-year-old daughter, Mirabel.
Speaking to cameras, the vice president explained that his wife and their two youngest children had accompanied him to Alaska because it was the last of the 50 states Usha had yet to visit. He was traveling there to speak at a Republican National Committee rally in support of Senator Dan Sullivan’s re-election campaign.

Social Media Reacts To Usha Vance’s Near-Fall
The footage quickly sparked concern on social media, with many viewers expressing relief that Usha and her newborn son (pictured above with the rest of the family) were unharmed. Others questioned why the uniformed airmen standing nearby didn’t rush to help her when she lost her footing…
“Yikes! I’m glad she and the baby are ok,” wrote one concerned viewer on Instagram. “Why didn’t anybody help her? They were just standing there?” questioned a second.
“Why didn’t any of those guys try to help her. They’re just standing there like statues,” agreed a third. “Is it not supposed to be the first instinct of the men to help her?” asked a fourth. “Just another day as a mom in America. No man comes to assist,” quipped a fifth.
“Great visual representation of how we treat mothers in the US. You better have that baby, but no one helps once it is outside of you. Why is no one helping this woman?” added a sixth.
“Men in 2026 just standing there looking,” noted a seventh, as an eighth added: “Wow says a lot about those ‘men.'” A ninth speculated: “Barack would be carrying everything for Michelle!”
