These days, as awareness of women’s health gradually increases, more women have been open and honest about their decision to freeze their eggs as part of their family planning process. One of those women is New York City representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The politician is opening up about the personal decision, sharing her egg-freezing journey with followers as she undergoes the fertility procedure at 36 years old. The New York native began documenting the process on Instagram, posting videos of herself giving herself hormone injections, explaining that she wanted to be more open about an experience that many women go through privately. In one of her earlier vlogs, she explained that the decision was one she made to “feel more in control of my life” as she continues to balance her demanding political career with her hopes for the future.
“Tomorrow, as part of my job, I am back in DC today because I’m going to be on ABC This Week,” she said in her initial reaction. “I’m going to be delivering an interview on national television. And it’s in the morning, and I have to take my shots because of the timing of it; I’m gonna have to take my shots in the green room before my interview. I want you all to see that, because women can do anything. And I think it’s [amazing] that I’m gonna be, you know, giving myself shots in the green room, get my glam on, roll out, talk international events, domestic policy, elections, pop out, live my life, do my thing.”
In other videos, Alexandria can be seen giving fans and followers updates on her symptoms, including bloating, and preparing for her egg retrieval day at the end of this week.

In addition to filming herself doing the egg retrieval injections, the representative also wrote and spoke openly about how there should be more awareness surrounding the process itself, as well as how expensive it is for women in America, noting that the entire procedure will cost her “thousands of dollars.”
“There is so much to advocate for – from the exorbitant costs and lack of insurance coverage to addressing the enormous gaps in medical research on women and reproductive care,” she wrote in a caption. “Not too long ago, I was waitressing and had to save for years to get to this moment… I knew of very few people (if any) that pursued it totally out of pocket. My hope is that by sharing my experience, it can help others and perhaps normalize not keeping women’s bodies in the shadows. We are amazing.”
On social media, thousands of users began praising the congresswoman for sharing her experience, happy to see the process and the work that goes into it being normalized. Additionally, some users felt that her decision to delay having children, as well as the revealed breakup with her longtime fiancé, Riley Roberts, are both signs that she may indeed decide to run for president against Donald Trump in 2028.
