Jill said she was not only “shocked” when Harris lost the election, but that she now feels it is unlikely she will witness a woman become President in her lifetime. Jill Biden Says She 'Probably' Won't See A Woman President In Her Lifetime During New Interview
Last week, on August 5th, a new episode of the podcast hosted by the daytime talk show featuring the former first lady aired. During her conversation with Kelly, the mom-of-one began reflecting on American politics as a whole, eventually diving into the 2024 election between former Vice President Kamala Harris and President Donald Trump, where numerous Americans were expecting to see the first woman president come to fruition.
Jill was explicitly asked whether she thought Americans would ever see a woman president in their lifetimes. At 75 years old, her answer was quite honest and straightforward.
"In my lifetime... I'm 75," she replied. "I feel like probably not in my lifetime, Kelly, but maybe in yours."
The educator went on to explain that she had felt very optimistic about Kamala's chances during the 2024 election, reminiscing on the large supportive campaign crowds and exciting energy, but things took a sharp turn when President Trump was re-elected for a second term.
"I really did think last time that Kamala was gonna win," she admitted, adding that she was "shocked" when she woke up at 5 a.m. the morning after Election Day and learned that Harris had lost.
Social Media Users React To Jill's Interview
After the interview between the two accomplished women went up on streaming platforms, it didn't take long for users to begin chiming in. Though there were numerous users who felt that her sentiments made sense, considering she's in her mid-70s and the country still has ways to go, there were others who felt the opposite way.
On platforms like Instagram, some users expressed disappointment in her response, especially given how there are more Democratic women hinting at running for President in the 2028 election, like Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and others.
"That makes me sad," responded an Instagram user. "We really had amazing women candidates, but voters in this country are sadly still too narrow-minded and sexist."
"Whatever men can do, women can do better," added a user. "Hopefully, the bigotry and misogyny in this country will get better, but definitely not under Donald's administration."
"I voted for Hillary, and I voted for Kamala too," a user admitted. "We are NOT done yet."
One user used a GIF to quote Ocasio-Cortez that read, "We must try," as another commented, "This is so heartbreaking."
"This comment made me sad because I wish everyone had the chance to experience a woman become president," added a user.
