Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce‘s lavish Madison Square Garden wedding was one of the biggest and most-talked-about celebrity events of the year – and while many people were celebrating with and for the couple, many others were disgruntled by the disruption their special day caused.

As the 36-year-old “I Knew It, I Knew You” singer and the 36-year-old Kansas City Chiefs tight end tied the knot on Friday, July 3rd, extensive security measures, road closures around the venue, restricted access near Penn Station, a record-breaking heat wave, and Con Edison power outages fueled backlash from many New Yorkers.

Many locals took to social media to slam the billionaire singer as “selfish” and “out of touch,” criticizing the timing of the extravagant wedding during one of the busiest holiday travel weekends of the year while the city grappled with soaring temperatures and electricity issues. Taylor Swift And Travis Kelce's Wedding

According to reports, the wedding of the year – if not the decade, depending on who you ask! – was attended by around 1,000 guests, including Gigi Hadid and her boyfriend Bradley Cooper, Patrick and Brittany Mahomes, Dakota Johnson, Anya Taylor-Joy, and many more. But while those lucky enough to score an invitation were celebrating with the happy couple, many New Yorkers who weren't on the guest list were left dealing with the disruption.

According to reports, the venue was transformed into a fairytale-style castle built inside Madison Square Garden for the lavish ceremony, with the elaborate set becoming one of the biggest talking points online. Many streets surrounding Madison Square Garden were closed from Thursday as part of the extensive security operation, affecting both drivers and pedestrians alike.

Access to Penn Station and Moynihan Train Hall was also impacted, with commuters hoping to catch the subway, Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road, or New Jersey Transit ahead of the holiday weekend being redirected to alternative entrances, raising concerns about overcrowding.

New Yorkers Were Told To Conserve Energy On The Day Of The Wedding

As the highly-anticipated wedding also took place during a grueling heat wave, the already hectic holiday weekend was made even more challenging for many New Yorkers!

Con Edison urged customers to conserve energy on Friday as soaring temperatures placed heavy demand on the power grid. The utility also shut off electric service to thousands of residential and commercial customers in response to outages and equipment issues caused by the extreme heat. Needless to say, many people took to social media to vent their frustrations…

X Comments

"I'm sorry but the juxtaposition of a big celebrity wedding shutting down part of the city and having access to the highest quality of electricity/NYC resources while there are elderly and disabled NYers who will die today because ConEd shut their power off is so [expletive] bleak to me," one person wrote on X.

"No AC in Penn Station but plenty of electricity for the crass corporate wedding happening just above it today," slammed a second.

"This is [expletive] disgusting! Only a completely selfish pair of people would do this in the middle of a terrible heat wave on a holiday week!" added a third.

"@NYCMayor we are supposed to conserve energy while @taylorswift13 lights up the Garden like a [expletive] Christmas tree," wrote a fourth.

Instagram Comments

The criticism didn't stop on X, as Instagram users were just as vocal – especially in the comment section to a post that read: "I'm sorry but if you think a billionaire shutting down one of the busiest streets in NYC on the 4th of July so she can have a wedding in a castle built inside a basketball court is not the epitome of out of touch and "let them eat cake" then you just don't care about people."

"Hypocrites – and people idolize celebrities. They don't care about you. They care about the money you make for them," slammed one Instagram user. "Ultimate in out of touch and self-indulgent!" exclaimed a second. "Total elite, out of touch hypocrites! And Mamdani let it all happen while telling everyone else to conserve energy!" wrote a third. "No one is that important!" declared a fourth.

"She is an ungrateful selfish woman and she never cared about anyone except herself," commented a fifth, while a sixth called the whole thing "gross." A seventh concurred: "@taylorswift is a selfish mean-girl who only cares about herself and brags about everything she does... her vanity is out of control and I'm sure she'll sell the wedding video and put it in a documentary for her fans to go see in theaters."

"I don't think this stupid stunt was that well received, so basically this blew up in her face," wrote an eighth, adding: "Most people only cared about celebrating America's 250th birthday and were [expletive] that this hurt the small businesses around MSG on one of the busiest weekends of the summer."
